EghtesadOnline: Incumbent Majlis Speaker Ali Larijani said he has decided not to stand in the upcoming parliamentary polls.

In a press conference on Sunday, Larijani, who has chaired the parliamentary sessions since June 2008, said, “Holding a post for 12 years is enough and this decision is not impulsive and is well considered,” IRNA reported.

The top lawmaker also said he has no plan to run for president in the 2021 presidential vote.

Iran on Sunday began the registration of candidates for the parliamentary vote, which will be held on Feb. 21, 2020. The new parliament will begin working in May, Financial Tribune reported.

Candidates contest in 208 constituencies for 290 seats. A constitutional watchdog, the Guardians Council, must screen and approve the hopefuls.

Those wishing to register must be between 30 and 75 years old, and hold a master’s degree to be qualified.
