EghtesadOnline: In a decree on Sunday, Leader of Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei appointed Judiciary Chief Ayatollah Sadeq Amoli Larijani as chairman of Expediency Council and a member of Guardians Council.

Ayatollah Larijani replaces the late Ayatollah Seyyed Mahmoud Hashemi Shahroudi who passed away last Monday at the age of 70 after months of ill health, Leader.ir reported.

The Expediency Council is mainly responsible for resolving disagreements between the Iranian Parliament and the Guardians Council, which itself supervises the parliament.

On the Guardians Council, Ayatollah Larijani will serve as one of the six jurisprudents (experts in Islamic law) who, along with six jurists, vet the laws approved by the parliament and oversee presidential and parliamentary elections, according to Financial Tribune.

In his decree, the Leader highlighted the significant role of the Expediency Council in consolidating the foundations of the Islamic Republic system and recommended Ayatollah Larijani focus efforts on fulfilling his “important responsibilities” in his new capacity.
