EghtesadOnline: Supporting legitimate governments in the region is Iran's inalterable policy, said on Friday Ali-Akbar Velayati, Secretary-General of the Global Assembly of Islamic Awakening.

Supporting legitimate governments in Iraq and Syria is part of Iran's inalterable policy, Velayati told reporters in the Iraqi capital Baghdad.

He noted that Iran supported the Syrian and Iraqi governments at the request of the two countries, according to IRNA.

Velayati voiced hope for the defeat of terrorist groups and their advocates, adding that Iran is not directly involved in liberation of Mosul.

The official said that holding the Global Assembly of Islamic Awakening in Baghdad shows the commitment to fighting terrorism in the Islamic World.

Velayati on Wednesday left Tehran for Baghdad to participate in the 9th meeting of the supreme council of the world body.

The meeting, which will be hosted by Head of the Supreme Islamic Council of Iraq Ammar Hakim, is expected to be attended by top figures from different countries.

It will take place from October 22-23.
