EghtesadOnline: A senior official at National Iranian Gas Company (NIGC) has announced that Iran imports less than three percent of its need to gas from Turkmenistan, stressing Iran is not worried if gas import from that country is cut.

The country is capable of filling the gap if necessary, Saeed Momeni told reporters in this northern Iranian province on Wednesday, according to ILNA.

Although the deal on gas exchange between Iran and Turkmenistan is near to expire and is also likely not to be extended, Iran is not worried about the issue, Momeni stressed.

As he said, the decision on extension or expiration of the deal will be made after the visit of the managing director of NIGC who is now in Turkmenistan to discuss the issue.

About 4.3 million cubic meters of gas is daily being imported from Turkmenistan to Golestan province, the official noted.

To manage the household gas consumption, NIGC plans to cut the gas used for the power plants and steel and cement industries, Momeni stressed.

If the country saves 10 percent of its energy consumption, it will face no cut of gas, Momeni concluded.
