EghtesadOnline: Twenty-five percent of the packaging industries have now shifted toward using plastics instead of cardboards due to the rise in paper price, says Managing Director of Cardboard and Paperboard Industries Association Aliqoli Hosni-Azami.
“Concerns have been raised about the negative environmental and health effects of plastic packaging, as the depreciation of the national currency drove up cardboard prices two- to four-fold over the past year and a half,” Hosni-Azami was quoted as saying by IRNA.
The chemical structure of most plastics makes them resistant to many natural processes of degradation and as a result they are slow to degrade and afflict land, waterways and oceans. Living organisms, particularly marine animals, can be harmed either by mechanical effects, such as entanglement in plastic objects, problems related to ingestion of plastic waste, or through exposure to chemicals within plastics that interfere with their physiology.
Effects on humans include disruption of various hormonal mechanisms, Financial Tribune reported.
