EghtesadOnline: An Iranian scientist has made a revolutionary breakthrough in treating cancer. He invented a device which can increase the life expectancy for cancer patients.
Dr Majid Ebrahimi Warkiani’s project attracted so much attention that he was invited to present his lecture at the 2nd International Nastaran Symposium which held September 28-29th in 2016 by Nastaran Centre for Cancer prevention (NCCP) in Mashhad.
He said in an exclusive interview with ISNA that cancer cells are different from normal ones in their morphology, adding the size and the biochip he has developed is able to isolating cancerous cells in the blood.
He and his team have been working on this biochip for the past four years which is capable of cleansing the blood of patients from cancer cells, Warkiani said, adding that this system causes the cancer to metastasize or spread through the body
The new systems are already being used to separate circulating tumour cells (CTCs) from blood to enable them to undergo genetic analysis for advanced cancer management.
Warkiani got his PhD in Mechanical Engineering from Nanyang Technological University (NTU), and undertook postdoctoral training at Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
“The device is commercialized in Singapore and clinical test all around the world. We are planning to bring the system here that can be used in Mashhad in the near future in Tehran or other cities of Iran” he declared.
He continued this technology will help to increase the life expectancy of the cancer patients, saving millions of the dollar in cancer treatment all around the world and minimize the side effect of chemotherapy.
The young scientist expressed his satisfaction regarding the scientific level of the 2nd International Cancer Symposium.
According to Warkiani, this kind of event in Iran will make a platform for more cooperation between countries. Dr Mir Ahmadi, the head of NCCP, is one of the pioneers in this field in Iran.
