EghtesadOnline: Iran is intended to establish the Persian Gulf National Foundation in a bid to promote information on the historic waterway, Ali Jannati Minister of Culture and Islamic Guidance said on Sunday.

Establishment of the Persian Gulf National Foundation can help collect and keep myriads of documents, maps and atlases related to this waterway, Jannati said in a meeting with university officials, reports IRNA.

He said that the Persian Gulf National Foundation will be based in the southern province of Hormozgan.

Establishment of the Persian Gulf National Foundation can help produce films on the issue of Persian Gulf, the culture minister added.

An extension of the Indian Ocean (Gulf of Oman) through the Strait of Hormuz, the Persian Gulf lies between Iran to the northeast and the Arabian Peninsula to the southwest. The Shatt al-Arab river delta forms the northwest shoreline.

The body of water is historically and internationally known as the 'Persian Gulf'. Some Arab governments refer to it as the 'Arabian Gulf' or 'The Gulf', but neither term is recognized internationally.

The name Persian Gulf is used by the International Hydrographic Organization.
