EghtesadOnline: About 292 tons of raw silk worth 385.76 billion rials ($11.28 million) were imported during the last Iranian year (March 2017-18), figures released by the Islamic Republic of Iran Customs Administration show.

Uzbekistan with around 288 tons was the main exporter of the product to Iran over the period followed by the UAE, Turkmenistan, China, Singapore and Uganda, Mizan Online reported.

In an earlier interview with Financial Tribune, Ali Asghar Dadashpour, the head of Sericulture Expansion Center with the Agriculture Ministry said Iran is the world’s eighth biggest country in the field of sericulture, after China, India, Uzbekistan, Thailand, Brazil, Vietnam and North Korea.

Gilan Province in northern Iran accounts for half of raw silk cocoon production. Other sericulture hubs include Mazandaran, Golestan, Khorasan Razavi, North and South Khorasan, East Azarbaijan and Isfahan, Financial Tribune reported.
